Arsenal’s midfield has been struck by injuries this season, and many Arsenal fans have been calling out for an addition to provide cover. The Gunners have recently been linked to Egyptian international Mohamed Elneny, and it has been reported that Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign the midfielder.
Elneny currently plays for FC Basel where he has won the Swiss Super League three times. The 23 year old has been an important part of the Basel side since joining in 2013, and looks like he could be a perfect fit for Arsene Wenger’s side.
It is unclear as to how Wenger will use the player. Elneny can play both roles of holding midfielder and box to box midfielder, however with Coquelin’s absence, you would expect him to play the holding role.
At 5ft 11in, the Egyptian is not the typical defensive midfield powerhouse. Although, like Coqulein, he makes up for his lack of height with his aggression and determination. So what makes Mohamed Elneny the perfect fit for Arsenal?
Elneny is very comfortable when in possession, which is an important attribute to have as an Arsenal player. On top of this, his quality of long and short distance passes are particularly impressive. Not only does he posses the technical skills to play for Arsenal, but he also has the quick and explosive style of play to suit the Premier League. His energy and high work rate suggests he could provide suitable cover for the injured Coquelin.
At just £7 million, would Elneny be a good signing for Arsenal? But more importantly, could he help Arsenal win the title?
