Liverpool are in a strong position to make the last 16 of the Europa League after a goalless draw away at Augsburg.
In a dull first half, Liverpool had several chances to open the scoring, with Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge both having shots which were both comfortably saved by Marwn Hitz.
Augsburg had a golden chance to take the lead when Alexander Esswein forced a great save from Simon Mignolet after a great turn in the box.
The second-half was more entertaining and Liverpool should have taken lead, but Daniel Sturridge, who’s returning from a long term injury, failed to connect with James Milner’s cross six yards out.
Alberto Moreno’s powerful 25-yard strike was pushed past the post by Hitz as the visitors looked for the all important away goal.
With 15 minutes left, the home side should have taken the lead. Midfielder Ji Dong-Won found space on the edge of the box, and his well-struck effort hit the outside of the upright and went wide.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who said his side can win the Europa League, was not happy with his teams performance.
“We should be realistic about the result, that’s OK in a European away game. We could have scored goals but as a performance I am not satisfied.
“We fight for consistency and played like this in the game, but we always let them come back in the game and that’s not necessary. I’m not 100% happy about this game.
“My problem is that, with our quality, we should have had more. I have to be patient, but I’m not a patient man, not really. My feeling is we could have done better.”
Liverpool will host Augsburg in the second leg on Thursday 25th February, followed by Manchester City in the League Cup Final at Wembley three days later.
