Real Madrid have reached their twelfth European final after Los Blancos won 1-0 at home against Manchester City in last night’s Champions League semi-final second leg.
A Fernando own goal was enough to send Zinedine Zidane’s side, and ten time winners, to the final at the San Siro, ending Manuel Pellegrini’s tenure at City without a trophy and potentially no Champions League football next season.
After Gareth Bale’s cross was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Fernando, the midfielder later clipped the post as City pressed for an equaliser. But Madrid’s dominance was shown, with the Spanish side also hitting the woodwork and forcing keeper Joe Hart into saves from Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo respectively.
But even though Los Blancos only had a one goal lead, an away goal for Pellegrini’s side would have seen them through to their first ever Champions League final.
Meanwhile Atletico made their way to Italy after winning on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate draw against Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich.
Real will prepare for the final at the San Siro on 28 May, in a repeat of the 2014 final, in which Los Blancos won 4-1 after extra time.
