New Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has wasted little time in rebuilding his squad since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium, and today it was announced of his first summer signing; Ilkay Gundogan from Borrusia Dortmund.
The 25 year old midfielder, who has won 16 caps for Germany, arrives on a four year deal in a fee reportedly worth around £20million.
Speaking on his move, Gundogan said; “When I learned of City’s interest, my heart was set on coming,” before adding, “Things have moved very quickly.”
But the German midfielder is currently out through injury after dislocating his kneecap in training at the beginning of May, resulting in him missing Euro 2016.
He was also sidelined for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with a back problem, an injury that kept him out of the majority of the 2013/14 season.
“The opportunity to work with a coach like Pep Guardiola is something I am really looking forward to and I am flattered to be the first signing the club has made this summer,” Gundogan said.
“I will give everything to help us win titles both in England and the Champions League. These are exciting times. I have my best years ahead of me and I think we can achieve great things together.”
Gundogan arrived at Dortmund in 2011 after a transfer from Nuremberg, and was an integral part under former manager Jürgen Klopp, reaching the 2013 Champions League final.
As for Dortmund, the loss of Gundogan will certainly be a big one, and with Marco Reus also on the move, it could be a tough season ahead for the German side.
