A historic day for British gymnastics as Amy Tinkler and Nile Wilson have won bronze on the Floor and High Bar respectively.
The 16-year-old Tinkler won bronze with a score of 14.933 on Floor. She has become the second female gymnast to medal in an individual event after Beth Tweddle’s uneven bars bronze in 2012.
Simone Biles took her fourth gold of the games with a score of 15.966, ahead of fellow team-mate Alexandra Raisman who won silver with 15.500.
For Tinkler, who is the youngest member of the gymnastics team, she did not go in expecting to medal.
“I wasn’t thinking about winning a medal. My coaches said I had nothing to lose and just to go out and enjoy it. I could hear a lot of cheers from the crowd and that helped me a lot.” she told BBC Sport.
Nile Wilson rounded up the artistic gymnastics schedule for Team GB on High Bar. The Commonwealth Champion went into the final in strong form.
Germany’s Fabian Hambuechen started the competition setting a benchmark of 15.766. For the London 2012 silver medalists, this was all that was needed for him to upgrade to gold in Rio.
Epke Zonderland fell during his routine, meaning that the Olympic Champion from 2012 failed to medal.
The 20-year-old from Leeds sat in second place for the majority of the competition after setting a score of 15.466.
However; American Danell Leyva finished the event with a score of 15.500, putting him in the silver medal position. The US gymnast also won silver in the Parallel Bar final earlier on in the evening.
Wilson claimed Great Britain’s first ever Olympic medal in the High Bar.
For British Gymnastics, this Olympic games has been the best in history, winning 7 medals. 2 golds, 2 silver and 3 bronze. Max Whitlock’s double gold being the pinnacle of GB’s success at Rio.
