Great Britain have won an unexpected gold medal after Joe Clarke came first in the men’s kayak final.
The 23-year-old set a time of 88.53 seconds which put him in first place with two other competitors to go, this cemented a medal for the Brit.
It was the first Olympic appearance for the Stoke-born athlete; however, he did win silver in the European Championships K1 team event in 2014.
Although many thought the Brit was set for bronze, Jiri Prskavec from the Czech Republic was on his way to defeating the time set by Clarke, but he only managed to claim the bronze.
Slovak Grigar also had the opportunity to beat the Brit, but after hitting a barrier and subsequently being timed with a a penalty, he finished in 5th.
Slovenia’s Peter Kauser went before Clarke, but small mistakes from the gruelling course meant that the Slovenian finished 0.17 seconds behind Clarke, taking silver.
This result gives Team GB their second gold medal of the games after Adam Peaty won gold in the swimming.
