2016 Wimbledon Champion, Andy Murray, has been named as the flag bearer for Team GB for the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony this Friday.

Andy Murray was picked ahead of the likes of Nicola Adams, the first female to win a Boxing Gold at the Olympics, and seasoned rower, Katherine Grainger.

The Olympic champion is the first tennis player to to receive the honour for Team GB.

2015 saw Murray help Team GB win the Davis Cup, 79 years since the nation’s last win.

The 29-year-old won an individual gold during 2012 and a silver in the mixed-doubles with Laura Robson in London.

London 2012 saw one of GBs most decorated Olympians, Sir Chris Hoy, lead the GB squad into the Olympic Stadium. Sir Bradley Wiggins was suggested as a flag bearer, but recently spoke that a female rider should get the honour, not him.

The USA has named most decorated Olympian, Michael Phelps, as their flag bearer.
