The most decorated Olympian, Michael Phelps, won his 19th Gold Medal at the end of Day two during Rio 2016.
The US swimmer competed in the Men’s 4x100m relay last night, winning Gold ahead of France and Australia.
Swimming the second leg of the relay, he gave USA a strong lead. The US won the relay with a time of 3:o9.92 seconds.
At 31-years-old he is the most decorated Olympian ever, with 23 medals over five games.
He announced his retirement in 2012, where the London Olympic games would be his last meet. However, the American stepped out of retirement in 2014, where he continued to show his top form that granted him 18 Olympic Gold medals.
Michael Phelps burst onto the scene in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics and at the age of 15, Phelps was the youngest male swimmer on the US team in 68 years. Despite not medaling, young Phelps finished fifth in the 200m butterfly.
The American has medaled in every Olympics since 2004, notably the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he won an incredible eight Gold Medals.
With 19 Olympic Golds, Phelps on his own beats the likes of Jamaica, India and Mexico on the medal table, and would be tied 35th with Argentina who also has 19 Gold medals.
The American has three more events during Rio 2016: 200m butterfly, 100m butterfly and the 200m individual medley.
Phelps has already qualified through to the semi-finals of the 200m butterfly where he’ll face Olympic Champion Chad le Clos and European champion Laszlo Cseh as his main competitors.
