Great Britain’s quartet of Katie Archibald, Laura Trott, Elinor Barker and Joanna Rowsell-Shand claimed the gold in the cycling team pursuit, beating the United States.

The gold medal gives Trott her third gold Olympic Medal, adding to the golds in the team pursuit and omnium at London 2012, making her the first British Woman to achieve the feat, overtaking female British Olympians Kelly Holmes, Rebecca Adlington and Victoria Pendleton.

“Winning a third gold medal was something I wanted to achieve and to do it alongside these three girls is just incredible.” Trott told BBC Sport.

“The feeling we were getting, it was like a machine was coming together. Coming away with a time of 4.10 was honestly incredible.”

Laura Trott and her Great Britain teammates smashed the world record in the first round of the women’s team pursuit, with the time of 4:13.260 and breaking the world record. Team GB then broke the world record two more times finishing in a time of 4:10.23 seconds in the final.

USA started the better off the two sides in the final due to Sarah Hammer being the driving force behind their tremendous start. As the race progressed Great Britain pulled it back before pushing into the lead at the halfway mark. When one of the riders fell off the USA quartet there was only going to be one winner with GB winning by over two seconds.

Canada took the bronze medal with a dominant victory over New Zealand in a time of 4:14.627. They started the race fantastically and saw the back of the New Zealand quartet within the end of the first lap.  Consequently, Canada won by an easy margin of four seconds.
