After the disaster that was the 2015/16 campaign, Chelsea fans are filled with a humble optimism heading into the new season. Having seen the success that new manager Antonio Conte, has brought to an average (at best) Italy side at Euro 2016, there is excitement building around the start of the new season alongside hope of a return of the defensive stability that we had come to associate with the Blues.
However, despite the new man in charge, there is no denying that Chelsea need to make some signings to stand any chance in the coming season. Arsenal have Xhaka, United have Ibrahimovic and City have signed Nolito and Gundogan and Chelsea have already strengthened their side with Batshuayi and Kante. With the season just weeks away, there are lots of rumours circulating about players making the switch to Stamford Bridge. Today we are going to look at 4 of the biggest names that Chelsea could potentially bring in to bolster their team for the upcoming campaign.
1. Alvaro Morata
Club: Real Madrid
Age: 23
Position: Striker
Chelsea have already secured the signing of Michy Batshuayi and with Diego Costa looking set to stay and Traore playing brilliantly in pre-season, Chelsea may not necessarily need a new striker. But despite his poor season last year, Morata is regarded as one of the hottest young talents in world football.
Bringing him in would allow Chelsea to have four quality strikers for the first time in years, which would really suit the two striker style that Conte has been testing out in pre-season. Real Madrid activated the Spaniards buy back clause to sign him from Juventus and although it seemed they were only doing this to make a profit, as pre-season continues, he looks increasingly likely to remain at the Bernabeu, putting this potential transfer to Chelsea in serious doubt.
Suitability for Chelsea: 7/10
Likelihood: 5/10
2. Leonardo Bonucci
Club: Juventus
Age: 29
Position: Central Defender
With John Terry set to play what is probably his final season, Chelsea will be looking for a young Center Back to replace him long term. At 29 years of Bonucci may not fill that category, but he is no doubt an exceptional defender who has worked under Conte before at both Juventus, and in the national side. Chelsea are locked in a battle with Manchester City to sign the Italian and it seems a bid of over £50M. But with Juventus desperate to keep hold of the defender, the signing looks very unlikely.
Suitability for Chelsea: 6/10
Likelihood: 4/10
3. Kalidou Koulibaly
Club: Napoli
Age: 25
Position: Central Defender
Another potential defensive signing for Chelsea is the Senegalese Koulibaly. Maybe not as proven as Bonucci, Koulibaly has four years on the Italian and could be seen as a long-term replacement for Terry. Chelsea have had two bids rejected already but a recent bid of £38M has been submitted and both parties seem intent on making a deal work. This deal seems likely to be completed before the season starts.
Suitability for Chelsea: 7/10
Likelihood: 9/10
4. Romelu Lukaku
Club: Everton
Age: 23
Position: Striker
A superb couple of seasons for Everton has been enough to prove that Chelsea were wrong for letting Lukaku go two years ago. Chelsea are heavily linked with a move for the Belgian. Bringing him back to Stamford Bridge would provide an excellent addition to the already blossoming Chelsea strike force, especially since the signing of Alvaro Morata is in serious doubt. Although Lukaku is keen to move, Chelsea and Everton are far apart in their valuations of the player, with Everton looking for no less than a domestic record £75M for the 23-year-old.
Suitability for Chelsea: 7/10
Likelihood: 8/10
