West Bromwich Albion have signed Belgium midfielder Nacer Chadli from Tottenham for a reported £13 million – a club record.
Chadli joins Matt Phillips and Brendan Galloway in moving to The Hawthorns during this summer’s transfer window, Phillips joining from Queens Park Rangers for £5.5 million and Galloway on loan from Everton.
Many felt that West Brom needed to strengthen their squad with top quality players, particularly forwards, after winning just one of their first three games in the Premier league. Therefore, the Midlands club were delighted they were able to acquire the services of the Belgian.
The Baggies’ Head Coach Tony Pulis said: “He’s a top, top player and I’m delighted we’ve got him.
“I said last week that these signings all had to be about players who would improve our squad. Nacer does precisely that.”
Nacer Chadli has had a mixed time at Tottenham Hotspur – always being a regular squad member but not being a starter in the first team.
The 27-year-old midfielder could feature for the first time away at Bournemouth right after the international break. However, he has not featured for Mauricio Pochettino’s side at all this season.
“I feel very good to be here. It came very quickly but I spoke to the club and they have a good team, a good manager and I am very pleased to be here”, Nacer Chadli told the official West Brom website.
“My ambitions? I just want to help the team win as many games as possible.”
The Belgium midfielder began his professional career at AGOVV Apeldoorn before moving to FC Twente in the summer of 2010. He went on to make 84 appearances for FC Twente across three seasons.
In 2013, Nacer Chadli moved to Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur for £7 million. Chadli made 119 appearances for the North London side, scoring 25 goals during three seasons at the club.
West Brom are hoping to continue to be busy right until Thursday’s deadline day, the sale of striker Saido Berahino being one of their main objectives.
