Controversy at the Parc des Princes saw Lille leave empty handed, while there was a postponement at Bastia in the latest round of fixtures.
Tuesday 7 February
Caen 0-4 Bordeaux Venue – Stade Michel d’Ornano
The midweek Ligue 1 fixtures got off to a great start with Bordeaux making it six games unbeaten, emphatically beating Caen away from home.
Diego Rolan opened the scoring for Les Girondins in the 11th-minute and Francois Kamano doubled the lead 11 minutes later, finding the top corner from outside the box.
Just past the hour mark, Kamano scored his second of the match to make a Caen comeback extremely unlikely and Jaroslav Plasil made sure of the points on the stroke of full-time.
Bordeaux remain 7th in the table but draw level on points with Saint-Étienne, while there was no change in the table for Caen either as they sit 16th.
Montpellier 1-2 Monaco Venue – Stade de la Mosson
Monaco continued their title charge with a win at Montpellier; however it was their first win by less than a three-goal margin in five games.
It looked as though it was going to be another straightforward victory for the visitors when Kamil Glik and Kylian Mbappe-Lottin scored two goals in four first half minutes.
La Paillade had other ideas and began the second period with a goal. Hilton pulled one back for the hosts to set up a close half, but Monaco held on despite losing Jemerson who was shown a red card late on.
Monaco’s lead at the top of Ligue 1 remains three points but Montpellier slipped to 14th.
Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Lille Venue – Parc des Princes
Late, controversial drama at the Parc des Princes ensured PSG remained in touch with Monaco at the top, leaving Lille in 13th place.
Les Parisians had to wait until the 70th-minute to make the breakthrough and it was the ever-reliable Edinson Cavani with the goal. A free-kick was deflected into his path and the Uruguayan mistimed his header, but the ball found the net from his shoulder.
It looked like Lille might have earned a point in the 86th-minute when Nicolas de Preville capitalised on a horror show from Alphonse Areola. The Frenchman took a number of heavy touches, gifting de Preville an opportunity to score.
This wasn’t the case however as a late PSG flurry saw Lucas Moura turn the ball home two minutes into stoppage time, despite being in an offside position, winning the match.
Wednesday 8 February
Angers 0-0 Rennes Venue – Stade Jean Bouin
Angers failed to take advantage of the five sides above them gaining no points as they were held to a goalless draw by Rennes.
It was a game of few chances but Rennes had the edge regarding shots on target and possession.
Six out of the seven teams above Rennes won so they fall further behind their rivals in 8th, while Angers are still 18th and in the danger zone.
Bastia P-P Nantes Venue – Stade Armand Cesari
The encounter between Bastia and Nantes at the Stade Armand Cesari was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Lorient 1-1 Toulouse Venue – Stade du Moustoir
Neither Lorient nor Toulouse could find the winner on Wednesday in a result that doesn’t do either side any favours.
The visitors took the lead midway through the first half through Andy Delort and Lorient were back on level terms on the hour mark when Sylvain Marveaux scored the equaliser.
Lorient remain bottom but there are promising signs after earning four points from their previous two outings, while Toulouse sit 10th in the league standings.
Lyon 4-0 Nancy Venue – Stade des Lumieres
With their fellow European contenders in hot pursuit, Lyon got an important three points on the board with a comfortable win over Nancy.
Four goals from four different scorers came in quick succession; a pair before half-time and a pair after the interval. Mathieu Valbuena scored the opener in the 39th-minute before Nabil Fekir found the net four minutes later to double Les Gones’ lead.
Alexandre Lacazette added a third from the spot after Memphis Depay drew a foul from Diallo Guidileye, before the Dutchman got on the score sheet for himself, again, after a four-minute interval.
There’s no change in the league standings for Lyon and Nancy, as they remain 4th and 11th respectively.
Metz 2-1 Dijon Venue – Stade Saint-Symphorien
Metz were able to capitalise on their relegation rival slipping up and strengthening the gap between them and Wednesday’s opponents, Dijon.
After a goalless first half, it took no more than one minute into the second for the deadlock to be broken and Ismaila Sarr was the goal scorer for Metz.
It became a difficult evening for Dijon on the hour mark when Jordan Loties received a second yellow card for a foul on Sarr. Metz took advantage six minutes later; Sarr was involved once again, drawing a foul from Fouad Chafik to win a penalty. Cheick Diabate converted from the spot to double the hosts’ lead.
Dijon did pull a goal back through a Cedric Varrault header but Metz held on for the win that took them to 12th, leaving Dijon in 17th place.
Nice 1-0 Saint-Étienne Venue – Allianz Riviera
Nice quickly got over their defeat at Monaco with a win against Saint-Étienne at the Allianz Riviera.
Just one goal was needed to separate the two sides at full-time and it came from Wylan Cyprien after just seven minutes, firing Les Aiglons to their 15th league win of the campaign.
There’s no change for either side in the Ligue 1 standings as Nice remain 3rd, 16 points ahead of Saint-Étienne in 5th.
Marseille 2-0 Guingamp Venue – Stade Vélodrome
Dimitri Payet scored his first goal on his return to Marseille to help his side to a 2-0 victory over Guingamp.
Les Olympiens were in front midway through the first half through a Bafetimbi Gomis header and the points were all but sealed when Payet scored a trademark free-kick in the 76th-minute.
Marseille are now 6th and level on points with Saint-Étienne, while Guingamp’s third successive defeat saw them slip to 9th.
