Nigel Adkins has returned to management, taking over at Sheffield United following Nigel Clough’s sacking last week.

The former Southampton manager had been out of work since December after being sacked by Championship club Reading. He has been appointed on a three year contract with the mandate to return the League One club to the Championship as early as possible.

The Blades missed out on promotion in the League One play-offs, losing to Swindon in the semi-finals which ultimately lost Clough his job.

The 50 year old spent four years as manager of Scunthorpe United before his move to St. Mary’s, where he achieved back to back promotions from League One to the Premier League. After being dismissed from Southampton with the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, Adkins then had a less than successful spell managing Reading before he was ultimately sacked.

United had approached Bradford for permission to speak to their boss Phil Parkinson but after that was denied, so the Blades have turned to former physio Adkins to restore them to former glories.
