Five signings to improve Leicester City

After a remarkable relegation escape from the Foxes they go on into their second season back in the Premier League with a healthy summer budget which they will be keen to delve into quickly and make swift improvements to their squad to ensure that they can push on from last season and stay up again.

Here at Sports Lowdown, our writer Ethan Gore looks at five players that could help Leicester City stay up yet again next season and potentially push them on towards a top ten finish.

1. John Guidetti

A player that has been in the limelight for years but never really got a chance to prove himself at Manchester City however continuous loan spells have helped his development. A successful season at Celtic scoring 15 goals has shown that he isn’t shy in-front of goal and he could be a good addition to the Leicester City squad. As his contract expires on July 1st, he will be available on a free transfer and would ensure that the Foxes would have extra firepower in the squad.

2. Ron Vlaar

Another player seemingly leaving on a free transfer and although this one is a more unlikely transfer for the Foxes, there’s always a chance. A very commanding, strong centre-half with years of experience under his belt as well as being a Premier League proven player. He could certainly be an exquisite acquisition for Leicester but there are likely to be bigger teams in the hunt for him as well so the Foxes may find it hard to pull off any sort of deal for the 30-year-old veteran defender.

3. Leroy Fer

Leroy Fer was a player who performed to a high standard in a relegated team and the versatile box-to-box midfielder would be a brilliant signing for Leicester. No doubt Fer will be looking to return to the Premier League once again and his price-tag would probably be around the £8m region as QPR would aim to claw back as much of the money they paid for him as they can. With six goals to his name last season, he proved to be a very astute footballer with a mean eye for goal. A midfield partnership of Leroy Fer and Esteban Cambiasso could potentially be very threatening.

4. Robert Huth

Pearson is very keen on bringing in the 30-year-old permanently after a very successful loan-spell for the Foxes. A string of very impressive performances saw Leicester’s defensive record improve dramatically and Robert Huth played a pivotal role in their ‘great’ escape. Signing Huth permanently would be brilliant business for Leicester and with his age, he’d more than likely be available for a cheaper price as he has been shut out at Stoke City by Mark Hughes.

5. Max Gradel

A potential return on the cards? – Maybe. Gradel is an explosive winger with great technique and speed. His performances for Saint-Etienne last season have placed him on the radar for many clubs around Europe. With 17 goals last season from out-wide, he would be a very suitable replacement for the outgoing Anthony Knockaert who is joining Standard Liege on a free transfer. It is likely that the 27-year-old winger would come with a hefty price-tag but money is no obstacle for Leicester who found themselves freely-spending their budget last summer and will do so yet again this summer. A signing of Gradel’s stature would certainly make a statement to the rest of the Premier League that the Foxes mean business and are here for the long-run.

But most importantly for the Foxes, re-signing Esteban Cambiasso on a new deal is very crucial. As Leicester’s best player last season it is important that they keep him at the club as his experience and leadership will be well-served and needed yet again.
