World champion Lewis Hamilton has claimed his first Monaco Grand Prix pole position of his career.
Hamilton, who has just signed a new three year deal with Mercedes, finished ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg, with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel behind the Mercedes pair in third.
Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo claimed fourth behind the German, with team-mate Daniil Kvyat fifth and Kimi Raikkonen in sixth.
Meanwhile Jensen Button had a disappointing qualifying session and will start from 12th on the grid.
Claiming pole position in Monaco is important due to the narrow track, making overtaking difficult in the city streets of the Principality.
And having lost out last time out in Spain behind teammate Rosberg, Hamilton will be aiming to further his lead over the German, which currently stands at a 20 point advantage over him in the drivers championship.
Qualifying ahead of the German gives him the advantage this Sunday, but Rosberg will be aiming for his third successive Monaco Grand Prix finish, having beat Hamilton to the chequered flag last year.
