Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough has been sacked by the club.

Clough seemed to have had a pretty good season at Bramall Lane, having finished 5th in League One and reaching the Capital One Cup semi final.

However, the defeat in the playoffs against Swindon Town and subsequent failure to gain promotion seems to have cost the 49 year old his job.

Clough began his managerial career in 1998, taking over at Conference club Burton Albion, where he led the Brewers to promotion to League Two in 2009.

He then moved to Championship club Derby County, a club his then late father Brian had also managed, but was sacked four years later after failing to reach the playoffs.

He then joined Sheffield United in 2013 with the club struggling in the League One relegation zone, but he led the club to a 7th placed finish and an F.A Cup semi-final. He bettered the Blades league position this season, but failure to achive promotion ultimately cost him his job

It is reported that Clough’s backroom staff which include Gary Crosby, Andy Garner, Martin Taylor, Simon Clough, Michael Forsyth and Matt Brown, will also leave the club.
