With the US Open set to start in less than a week, The Sports Lowdown takes a look at the runners and riders in this year’s competition. After looking at previous champions, we will now look at which American players have a chance of winning this year.
Rickie Fowler
26 year old Fowler has yet to win a Major, despite stellar performances in recent competitions. He managed to finish in the top five in all four Majors last year, including finishing second in the US Open. The world number 8 has yet to find his best from this year, although he does have five top ten finishes to his name. He will be amongst the favourites for this year’s competition and if he gets off to a good start he could well be the one to beat.
Jordan Spieth
Jordan Spieth only turned professional in 2012, but he already has a green jacket to his name after winning The Master earlier this year. The 21 year old is arguably the most exciting prospect in golf, having already played in the Ryder Cup for the United States last year. The world number two has only played in three US Opens, including one as an amateur. His best finish in his three starts is tied 17th, and Spieth will fancy his chances of challenging the leaders in this year’s competition.
