Coventry Bees’ grip on the Elite League title seems to be beginning to slip through their fingers after losing 36-22 to Poole Pirates, after the meeting at Brandon was eventually abandoned on Monday night in front of Sky TV cameras.
The result was the second consecutive defeat in a week for the Bees’ after Gary Havelock’s team succumbed to Swindon Robins 47-43 last Tuesday.
Both meets were drenched in drama as again, controversy followed the League leaders. Against Swindon, Jason Garrity was excluded from heat fourteen’s re-run with referee Mike Posselwhite deeming the Bees’ rider had caused Robins’ Dakota North to crash out.
Boss Havelock was livid saying, “I’m very frustrated over the decisions we’re getting and I can probably list ten or fifteen situations this season already.”
Against Poole, conditions were gradually getting worse and by ninth heat both Coventry’s manager Havelock and Promoter Mick Horton called for the meet to be immediately abandoned with concerns for rider safety on the ever slippery track.
Whether the decision by the officials to continue through to heat 10 before abandoning was influenced by Sky or Poole, it infuriated the Bees boss even further and led to no Coventry rider taking to the track for the heat, leaving the Pirates to win with an easy 5-0 and taking 4 league points to Coventry’s none in the Elite league.
