Falcao should turn to Mourinho to revive career

Two years ago, Radamel Falcao was one of the most feared strikers in Europe. However, a serious knee injury at Monaco and a disappointing loan spell at Manchester United has left the former Atletico Madrid man short of goals and confidence. Despite this, a number of clubs will still be interested in the Colombian this summer, and if Chelsea firm up their interest with a bid, Falcao should move to the Blues to revive his career.

One of the reasons Falcao struggled at United was due to manager Louis van Gaal rotating players throughout the season, meaning he never got the chance to play in a settled side. There will be no major overhaul at Chelsea this summer, meaning the players will already be used to a system and playing with each other, which will make it easier for Falcao to fit into the side and find his feet straight away.

Diego Costa is likely to be Chelsea’s first choice striker, but the Spaniard has a long standing hamstring injury which makes it difficult for him to play twice in a week. With Chelsea playing in the Champions League, Falcao should get plenty of chances at Stamford Bridge as Mourinho will rotate Costa to ensure he remains fit throughout the season. Mourinho may also decide to play Costa and Falcao as a pair, meaning they could have the chance to form a deadly strike partnership together.

Falcao’s finishing made him one of the most feared strikers in the world. Little was seen of his poacher’s instinct last season, although he did show how dangerous he can be around goal with strikes against Everton and Stoke. With Hazard, Oscar, Willian and Fabregas playing behind him, Falcao can expect plenty of chances to be provided for him when he is on the pitch.

Mourinho has admitted in the past how much he admires the player and knows all about him from their time in Spain, where they were on opposing sides of the Madrid derby. If Falcao felt underappreciated under van Gaal, it is unlikely he will feel the same working under Mourinho, who has a well-deserved reputation for getting the best out of players. Mourinho also knows how to manage players with persistent injury problems, shown last season by John Terry playing every Premier League game and Diego Costa remaining fit for the majority of the season.

Falcao has been linked with Chelsea several times over the years. Although it has never happened in the past, this summer it look as though Falcao will finally move to London. If he does, few would be surprised if he drastically improved on his tally of four goals last season. If Falcao can return to his best at Chelsea, the West London club will find themselves with two world-class strikers and the Columbian could be the missing piece in their jigsaw to fire them to European glory.
