It has been a quiet pre-season for Manchester United so far with little more than a few rumours appearing in the tabloids. However the time has come for Louis Van Gaal to make his move and he has done so with a jaw-dropping bid for Real Madrid’s Spanish star Sergio Ramos.
Here at The Sports Lowdown, we love to discuss whether a player coming into a club will have an impact and we take a look at the increasing likelihood of Ramos joining the Old Trafford club before the start of the season.
There has always been a rich group of defenders that have graced the hallowed turf of Old Trafford with stars such as Jaap Stam, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic playing a huge part in the success of the club over the last 25 years. However since the departure of Vidic and Ferdinand in recent seasons it has been no surprise that the Red Devil’s have departed from the top table allowing Chelsea, Manchester City and arguably Arsenal to jump well ahead of the club.
After Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure and the highly unsuccessful David Moyes era, the club have turned to Louis Van Gaal who slowly but surely is starting to turn the club around and over the course of the Premier League 2015/16 season we should see just how far the club have come and what more they need.
With the defence arguably their most pressing problem the arrival of Ramos could be sure-fire way of plugging that leaky defence and as one of the key defenders in world football his impact could be the difference that see’s them clinch back on to the coat-tails of the top 3.
Ramos hasn’t been successful at Madrid for no reason, his impending authority on the league has seen him become a superstar. Big and strong his vision and will in the game will see him be a success in the Premier League. Not sluggish either he has all the attributes that could see him rule the United defence for the next 5 years and launch United back into the title picture at Old Trafford.
However he is not going to be able to do this alone and unfortunately he still has three of the most disappointing centre-half partners in the squad that could be alongside him next season. In Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones, he has three defenders that have stood still as the quality in the Premier League has grown. There is no doubting that all three have the potential to be a more than competent partner for Ramos and he will have a big say in how each of these three defenders grow if he is to make the switch.
Ramos will also need to curb his temper in the Premier League, though his big bustling challenges are likely to be well received by the Manchester United faithful and are more likely to see warnings than large scale sending-offs in England.
What we do think however is that Manchester United could have a gem on their hands for the coming five years if the bid is accepted by Real Madrid. Ramos is also keen to join the Premier league side and so we think it is likely that with a few more signings over the course of the summer, Ramos and his fellow newcomers could see Manchester United return to the top table of English football, again joining the likes of Chelsea and their big-spending rivals across the city at the Etihad Stadium.
