British Number two Johanna Konta is through to the quarter-finals of the Nottingham Open after beating Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-5).
Konta, ranked at 147 in the world, has previously reached the quarter-finals at the Nottingham Open on her last two visits and took the deciding tie-break in a third set decider, where she will now move on to play world number 61 Monica Niculescu of Romania.
The match was halted on Wednesday evening with the light fading and on their return to the court on Thursday, they traded breaks before Konta took the tie against a player ranked 58 places higher in the world rankings.
Konta is playing at Nottingham this week as she steps up her preparation for the upcoming Wimbledon and will next week face many of the world’s best as the Aegeon Championships reach Edgbaston with competitors including defending champion Ana Ivanovic, Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka and last year’s Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard.
