Marcin Wasilewski Signs New Deal With Leicester City

Leicester City defender Marcin Wasilewski has announced he has signed a new contract with the Foxes, following his previous contract expiring this summer.

The Polish centre-back turns 35 next week and made the announcement of a new contract on Instagram. The new deal is expected to be an extra year with the Foxes, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2016.

His experience in the team has been vital to Leicester over the last two seasons and he became a regular starter for the first-team in his first year when Leicester were promoted to the Premier League as champions.

Although the fans knew what Wasilewski had to offer the team, not many would have expected how instrumental he would be in the top flight. After a tough few months at the bottom of the table, a formation change was an excellent adaptation from manager Nigel Pearson which saw Wasilewski playing alongside Wes Morgan and Robert Huth in defence.

This new formation was pivotal to Leicester’s late run of form, taking them from bottom of the league to 14th place in nine games, making it the greatest escape the Premier League has ever seen. Despite the defence leaking goals in the first half of the season, Wasilewski has been faultless and was one of the unsung heroes from Leicester City’s campaign.

The Pole saved the Foxes on a number of occasions and with the loan signing of Robert Huth bringing more experience to the team the defence was solidified, earning five clean sheets in six games.

Wasilewski also scored his first goal for the Foxes in the Premier League, which was also his first goal in English football, in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. His new deal is no less than he deserves, and he can now look to what is hoping to be another successful year with Leicester City.

With the signing of left-back Christian Fuchs from Schalke, and now the news of Wasilewski signing a new contract with the club, it seems Leicester are going about their business in the right way to build for the new season.
