Andy Murray reached the quarter- of the French Open with a four-set victory over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6/4 3/6 6/3 6/2.
Murray will next play Spanish clay court specialist David Ferrer after he demolished Marin Cilic in straight sets in what will be a 50/50 match for the Dunblabe born Brit.
Murray took the first set comfortably against the improved Chardy, but the recently married Scot seemed to take his foot off the gas, allowing the Frenchman to take the second set and go a break up on the third set.
This spurred Murray into action as he rallied to break back and then force a break of his own to take the third set. With Chardy tiring, Murray seized the initiative and secured a 14th win in a row on clay to move into a quarter-final clash with Ferrer at Roland Garros.
Elsewhere, women’s second seed Maria Sharapova was dumped out in straight sets by 13th seed Czech Lucie Safarova 7/6 6/4.
It will be Safarova’s first Grand Slam quarter-final, but for Sharapova it marks the earliest she has been beaten at Roland Garros in three years after reaching the final on each occasion. The former number one’s attention will now turn to the grass court season and Wimbledon.
