Nico Rosberg won his second consecutive Austrian Grand Prix to close the gap on team mate Lewis Hamilton to just ten points at the top of the Driver’s Championship. The German overtook Hamilton, who had started the race the pole, early on and went on to win the race comfortably.
It was a bad day for Hamilton who struggled throughout the race. The Englishman looked uncharacteristically untidy and failed to put any real pressure on Rosberg, who has now won three of the last four races. Felipe Massa beat Sebastian Vettel into third place, whilst his Williams team mate Valtteri Bottas finished in fifth position.
McLaren’s awful start to the season continued, with both Jenson Button and Fernando Alsonso unable to finish the race. Alonso withdrew early on after a crash with former Ferrari team mate Kimi Raikkonen. Both drivers were unhurt after the crash. Button’s race finished early yet again following more problems with his car.
While Mercedes look certain to retain their Constructor’s Championship title, the battle between their two drivers is intriguing and although Hamilton has had the edge so far this season, it seems Rosberg is coming into form at a pivotal time.
