There were no shocks on the opening night of the World Cup Of Darts in Frankfurt, but there was a piece of history as Gibraltar won their first ever World Cup match, while England, Australia and Belgium all booked their places in the next round.
Spain were the first ones to book their places in the second round after they beat Norway in the opening match of the World Cup. Cristo Reyes impressed as him and Antonio Alconas completed a whitewash over Norway.
Japan had double trouble in the early legs, but it didn’t hold them back from completing the second whitewash of the evening with a win over China to book their places into the second round of the competition.
Austria survived a very minor scare to progress into the second round as they won 5–2 against the Czech Republic. The unseeded Czech Republic took a 2-1 lead early on but Austria represented by Rowby-John Rodriguez and Mesur Suljovix won four straight legs to win the tie.
Gibraltar spurred on by the emotional and lively Dyson Parody raced to a 5-2 win over Italy, and the Italians made a good game of it, but their troubles on the doubles cost them as they crashed out in the first round.
Belgium brothers Kim and Ronny Huybrechts performed excellently and took out 129 and 139 respectively throughout the match as they wrapped up an fabulous 5-1 win over the Philippines.
Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis booked their places in the next stage of the competition after they completed the third whitewash of the night against Denmark and looked good for it as they averaged in the high eighties.
German stars Max Hopp and Jyhan Artut stormed into the second round after they produced the fourth whitewash of the night to dismiss India, as Jyhan Artut’s World Cup form was found once again for the Germans.
Paul Nicholson was looking to rediscover his form in the final match of the evening and got better as the tie went on after an awful start, and Australia went on to claim a 5-1 victory over Russia as Whitlock and Nicholson will take their places in the second round.
