England overcame a determined Slovenia side in their European Qualifying Group E game in Ljubljana.

Despite dominating the majority of the first half, it was the hosts that took the lead when Milivoje Novakovic broke a poorly executed England offside trap to side-foot his effort past Joe Hart.

On his 28th England appearance, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere scored his first international goal with a sweet left footed strike past the Slovenia goalkeeper twelve minutes into the second half.

Wilshere then gave England the lead with a similar effort. A clever flick from half time substitute Adam Lallana set up Wilshere who took one touch before unleashing a fierce effort into the top corner.

With England once again in control, they looked like they’d claim another valuable three points. But with six minutes remaining, Nejc Pecnik looked to have earned the hosts a point, rising above Kieron Gibbs to head past Hart from a cross from the left.

But just two minutes later, captain Wayne Rooney, who had missed two good opportunities earlier in the second half, latched onto a deflected pass and made it three for England from a one-to-one situation with goalkeeper Handanovic.

England held on to claim the win, their sixth in as many games, topping the group in comfortable circumstances. It was also the first time that England have gone unbeaten for a whole season since 1990/91.

In addition, it was a special evening for Rooney, who’s 48th England goal takes him level with Gary Lineker and just one behind the all time goalscoring record holder, Bobby Charlton.
