BDO stalwart Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams will play in this year’s cross-code Grand Slam of Darts after finally accepting an invitation to play in one of darts most iconic events.
Adams had for so long refused an invite to play in the event, remaining a staunch BDO member despite many of his colleagues competing in the PDC run cross-code event but after a change in how the event is run including it being ranked for PDC players and with more co-operation on behalf of both codes of darts organisations, ‘Wolfie’ as he is affectionately known has decided to accept an invitation.
Previously after refusing a number of invitations to play in the event, the PDC had banned Adams from ever competing in the event but have relented and opened the door to a more relenting of tensions between the two organisations.
Adams told BBC Sport “I was spoken to by the BDO just over a week ago and was told I would get an invitation. I know it will make a lot of my supporters very happy indeed. Hopefully I’ll do well and it would be nice to win it, but who knows?”
The cross-code event takes place at the Wolverhampton Civic Centre in November and is one of the highlights of the darting calendar for fans, as the world’s best players compete to be crowned Grand Slam of Darts Champion.
This year’s qualifiers so far include PDC World Champion Gary Anderson, Micheal Van Gerwen, Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis and Raymond Van Barneveld whilst so far the BDO will be represented by Adams, World Champion Scott Mitchell, Geert De Vos and Martin Phillips with a further four BDO places on offer in qualifiers later in the year. The PDC will have up to 24 qualifiers in total with automatic spots still up for grabs in the years remaining majors with the remaining places to be filled by a qualifier later in the year.
