AUSTRALIA 2 NIGERIA 0

The opening to this group D contest lacked any real pace and goal-scoring opportunities as warmer temperatures dictated the tempo at the Winnipeg Stadium.

Nigeria forward Desire Oparanoize did look dangerous but was let down on numerous occasions by her touch in the first ten minutes.

But it was Alen Stajcic’s Matildas’ that took the lead after some good work by captain Lisa De Vanna, after slicing a past the Nigerians defence and neatly passing to Kyah Simon, who lifted the ball over the onrushing Precious Dede.

It could have been 2-0 soon after but Player of the Match, De Vanna’s volleyed attempt went wide after Simon’s blocked effort had found her with spare in the Nigerian’s penalty area.

Edwin Okon’s Super Falcons then began to threaten the Australian goal themselves but were denied after some very good defending.

However the Australian’s doubled their lead in the second half when Simon’s comfortably slotted home after Samantha Kerr’s lofted cross had found both her and Tameka Butt unmarked in the area.
