GERMANY 10 IVORY COAST 0
It was a dismal start to the Ivorians maiden World Cup after the two-time Champions Germany set the second biggest win in the tournament’s history, the first being a 11-0 thrashing of Argentina in 2007.
The Germans made a fantastic start to the game as forward Celia Sasic scored a first half hattrick, before fellow striker Anja Mittag added a further two to give the Germans a five goal advantage at the break.
Germany could have quite easily found double figures in the first half, but a combination of missed opportunities and some good goalkeeping from Dominique Thiamale prevented them from doing so.
But Germany, who won all ten of their qualifying matches, continued their dominance in the second half. Mittag completed her hattrick, before goals from Simone Laudehr, Sara Daebritz, Melanie Behringer and Alexandra Popp completed the rout.
