MEXICO – 200/1
The Mexican’s made heavy work of booking their place at Canada 2015 after kicking off the CONCACAF Women’s Championship with a defeat to eventual runners-up Costa Rica. However, having recovered to progress to the Semi-Finals, they were eventually beaten by winners USA.
Mexico are now beginning to be rewarded for nurturing the talents of home-grown players, with 95% of the current squad all coming from the youth teams. Most notable examples of this are goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago and forward Monica Ocampo. Whilst Mexico’s style of play and technique have improved, it is the squad’s fitness that stands out the most.
Former International, Leonardo Cuellar, 63, who represented his country in the 1978 World Cup, has been at Mexico’s helm since 1998 and still plays a key role in furthering women’s football.
Having competed in USA 1999 and Germany 2011, Canada 2015 is Mexico’s 3rd appearance at the Women’s World cup.
ONE TO WATCH – CHARLYN CORRAL
The 23 year old striker burst on the international scene at the Under-20 CONCACAF World Championships, where she finished as the tournament’s top scorer. The 5ft Corral will be looking forward to facing the very best goalkeepers and defenders the world has the offer during Canada 2015.
