Novak Djokovic has moved into the fourth round of Wimbledon after he dismissed Bernard Tomic 6-3 6-3 6-3. The defending champion was largely in control as he produced a devastating display to cruise past the young Australian in straight sets.
In the opening set, Djokovic was forced into a lengthy third game, but once the Serbian edged 2-1 ahead, he quickly gained control. An incredible lob and forehand winner set Djokovic on his way to breaking Tomic, and the defending champion was clinical in maintaining the lead to close out a routine set 6-3.
The Australian held firm in the early exchanges of the second set, but he was unable to make an impression on Djokovic’s serve. The world number one was far too strong for Tomic in the baseline rallies, using his deep groundstrokes to extract the errors from his opponent. Soon enough, Djokovic utilised his baseline dominance to grab the crucial break of serve, and an incredible display of defence from the Serbian sealed another break and also the second set.
The third set saw Tomic finally pressurise Djokovic as the Australian held a 40-0 and 30-0 lead on the Serbian’s opening service games. However, the defending champion confidently snuffed out any chance of Tomic getting a foothold into the match, and remained impenetrable on serve. Eventually, the relentless pressure of the world number one saw Tomic fall behind once again, as Djokovic sensed the victory. The Serbian went on to emphatically complete the win with an ace, and swiftly moved into the second week of Wimbledon.
Djokovic will now face Kevin Anderson in the fourth round, after the South African beat Leonardo Mayer in straight sets.
In the other matches, Stanislas Wawrinka eased past Fernando Verdasco to set up a meeting with David Goffin, who also earned a comfortable win over Marcos Baghdatis.
However, Nick Kyrgios produced another incredible performance to dump last year’s semi-finalist Milos Raonic out of the tournament, after the Australian edged the Canadian in four sets. Kyrgios will face Richard Gasquet in the next round, as the Frenchman also dispatched a semi-finalist from last year in defeating Grigor Dimitrov 6-3 6-4 6-4.
On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova comfortably progressed into the next round, as Serena Williams avoided a huge upset as she beat Britain’s Heather Watson 6-2 4-6 7-5.
In addition, there were wins for Sloane Stephens and Victoria Azarenka, but Samantha Stosur was knocked out.
