England’s Danny Willett has claimed his third European Tour title as he beat fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick by one shot at yesterday’s European Masters.

The 27 year old, who was tied at sixth at last week’s Open, shot five under par 65 to finish the event in Switzerland 17 under overall.

Willett had shared the lead with Fitzpatrick as they headed into the final day, but he’d managed to shoot a bogey-free final round to claim the win.

Tyrrell Hatton ended in third place, two shots behind the eventual winner, to complete a top three of English golfers. Hatton carded a 62, which was the best round at the Crans-sur-Sierre course.

Willett said after his win; “I kept very, very calm all day. I just waited for the right things to happen to get on a run.

“Fitzpatrick played some great golf and kept the pressure on. When someone is right on your heels you know you can’t let up.”

Another Englishman and former winner, Lee Westwood, was tied for 37th on three under, whilst Spain’s Sergio Garcia ended the day in sixth.

Willett’s wins makes him the seventh British winner at the European Masters, and he joins an illustrious list which includes Nick Faldo, Chris Moody, Jamie Spence, Barry Lane, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald.
