The ongoing saga over whether David De Gea moving to Real Madrid inched a step closer at the weekend when he was left out of the Manchester United side for the first game of the season with new recruit Sergio Romero taking charge.
Whilst Romero, the Argentine national goalkeeper is a more than competent replacement for the Old Trafford side, should De Gea indeed make his expected move to the Bernabeu to play under Rafa Benitez, Louis van Gaal will want to get a world class replacement in, if they are to once again challenge at the top table.
Here at The Sports Lowdown we take a look at three world class replacements that could take their place between the sticks at Old Trafford
1. Hugo Lloris – Tottenham Hotspur
To say a lot of pundits were surprised by Hugo Lloris’s move to Spurs from Lyon back in 2012 is an understatement. The French international goalkeeper was to move from perennial Champions league qualifiers Lyon to White Hart Lane where he was not guaranteed European football and to most it seemed like a bit of a backwards step.
Hi arrival at Spurs did not guarantee first team football straight away as he was to compete with the ageing but top class goalkeeping abilities of Brad Friedel but he soon managed to force his way into the side, ending the United States goalkeeper’s record of consecutive appearances in the Premier League.
Since then Lloris has shown the type of goalkeeper he is that makes him a certainty in both the Spurs and French national team and at just 28 years of age, there is plenty of time for him to continue to reach his peak as a player, with goalkeepers notoriously peaking later in life.
This off-season has seen Lloris linked with a move to Manchester United with the uncertainty of goalkeeper David De Gea and his on/off move to Real Madrid. Lloris will probably kick himself that he got a wrist injury in the off season which almost certainly scuppered a move to Old Trafford and he remains on the sidelines, hoping to be back into first team action in the next week or two.
Whether this is for Spurs or Manchester United, remains to be seen but there is no doubt he could command a place in the Manchester United side and would likely usurp Sergio Romero between the sticks at the Red Devils. Manchester United need a world class keeper and Lloris has that quality that will see him make a big impact at Old Trafford should he be afforded that opportunity.
