There was lots of drama in last week’s Elite League Speedway, and there have been up’s and down’s all week as the season draws to a close. The title is still up for grabs and the relegation battle heats up.
On Monday, Belle Vue Aces kept their play-off hopes alive with a 48-42 win over rivals Swindon Robins with Max Fricke and Stefan Nielsen both scoring 9+1 for the Aces, whilst Wolves recorded a vital 49-43 win over bottom club Leicester Lions, aided with 12 points from Ricky Wells, to push them clear of the drop.
Two evening’s later, the Aces looked to continue their form when Leicester were the visitors, but following poor weather, the meeting was postponed. This was also the case on the south coast as Poole looked to extend their lead at the top of the Elite League table when the Pirates were due to host Swindon. Coventry failed to capitalise on Poole’s postponement, losing 54-35 at Kings Lynn, with Cardiff Grand Prix winner Niels-Kristian Iversen scoring an outstanding 18 points for the Stars.
Kings Lynn looked to make it successive league wins when the Stars travelled to Swindon on Wednesday evening, but despite Iversen scoring 9 points on the night, the Robins were too strong, winning comfortably at the Abbey 53-39 with 12+1 from Grzegorz Zengota.
On Friday, the league’s top two sides were in action, and Poole extended their lead at the top with a 40-50 win at Lakeside Hammers, with Kyle Newman recording an impressive 15+2 for the Pirates, whilst the Coventry Bees lost at home to Swindon 36-55 despite Chris ‘Bomber’ Harris scoring 10+1.
On Saturday, Leicester got some revenge over Wolves after their defeat on Monday, winning 48-42 with 14 points from the always impressive Jason Doyle, to close the gap on them to six points.
