Roger Federer produced another dominant win to reach the fourth round, as Andy Murray also enjoyed a comfortable victory. Petra Kvitova, Victoria Azarenka and Simona Halep all progressed, whilst Johanna Konta continued her superb run with another upset, this time over Andrea Petkovic.
The sixth day of the tournament saw Roger Federer play Philipp Kohlschreiber for a place in the fourth round, and the Swiss maestro made the perfect start in the opening set as he broke the German early on, and maintained his lead to clinch the first set. Even though Kohlschreiber raised his level at times to break Federer’s serve twice in the following two sets, the world number two had simply too much overall and eventually completed an efficient 6-3 6-4 6-4 win. Federer will play John Isner next, after the American was leading Jiri Vesely by two sets when the Czech had to retire with an injury.
In addition, Andy Murray was similarly in dominant form against the Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, as the Brit held off his opponent to secure a 6-3 6-2 7-5 victory. Murray will face Kevin Anderson in the fourth round, after the big serving South African took care of Dominic Thiem 6-3 7-6 7-6.
Stan Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet both progressed in straight sets, whilst Donald Young fought back from two sets down for the second time at the tournament to defeat Viktor Troicki 4-6 0-6 7-6 6-2 6-4. Tomas Berdych also advanced in four sets, beating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
On the women’s side, Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova eased into the next round after securing straight set wins, whilst Victoria Azarenka edged Angelique Kerber 7-5 2-6 6-4 in a high quality encounter. Also, Samantha Stosur and Sabine Lisicki were victorious in three sets. However, arguably the main highlight was Johanna Konta’s progress into the fourth round, as the Brit held her nerve to see off Andrea Petkovic 7-6 6-3.
