Michael Van Gerwen completed a hat-trick of victories at the Dubai Masters after making a brilliant comeback to win the Final against Phil Taylor 11-8.
The World No.1 trailed Taylor 8-6 before reeling off a run of 5 successive legs to clinch the title away from ‘The Power’. The final was very reminiscent of the 2013 Players Championship Final between these two players when Taylor led 8-3, before Van Gerwen won 7 consecutive legs without ever giving Taylor a chance at a Double.
Earlier in the day, MVG had to comeback to beat Adrian Lewis 11-9 in the Semi-Final having trailed 6-3 behind at one stage. ‘Jackpot’ came off his win yesterday with a very impressive start as he took the opportunities handed to him by Van Gerwen who was missing Doubles very badly. But in the middle of the match MVG started to hit the Doubles again and fought back to even it up at 9-9, then Lewis had 1 Double to lead 10-9, but missed it. MVG took his chance and didn’t look back as he went on to win 11-9.
Taylor demolished Gary Anderson in his Semi-Final 11-3, having led 8-1 at one stage. The newly crowned Premier League Champion couldn’t live with the old master as Taylor rolled back the clock and delivered a masterclass to the World Champion. After sharing the first 2 legs of the match, Taylor’s level went into space as he won 7 legs on the spin to lead ‘The Flying Scotsman’ 8-1 at one point, and although Anderson pulled a couple of legs back, Taylor cruised to an 11-3 victory.
Then in the Final, Van Gerwen once again started off slowly as Taylor leapt out of the starting blocks and took advantage of MVG’s sloppiness to lead 6-3. Taylor then increased his advantage to 8-6 and seemed to be heading towards victory before the Green Machine clicked into life, and Mighty Mike found his throw. He finished the final like a house on fire to win the Title.
