We have had many fighters over the years who have reigned at their respective weights, but I do not think the British fighting scene has looked as healthy as it is right now, and the reason I am so positive about British boxing is the amount of talent there is at so many weight divisions.
The current World Champions we have in Britain are James DeGale – IBF Super Middleweight Champion, Kell Brook – IBF Welterweight Champion, Lee Selby – IBF Featherweight Champion, Carl Frampton – IBF Super Bantamweight Champion, Scott Quigg – WBA Super Bantamweight Champion and Jamie McDonnell – WBA, Bantamweight Champion, giving Britain six current champions.
What makes the current crop so exciting are the amount of fighters in a number of weight divisions, who are world rated or earlier in their careers but early signs are very good. The following list is made up of the different weight division:
Heavyweight – Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and David Price
Cruiserweight – Anthony Bellew and Ola Afolabi
Light Heavyweight – Nathan Cleverly
Super Middleweight – George Groves, Callum Smith, Paul Smith, Martin Murray and Rocky Fielding
Middleweight – Billy Joe Saunders, Anthony Ogago and Chris Eubank Jnr
Super Welterweight – Liam Smith
Welterweight – Amir Khan and Frankie Gavin
Super Lightweight – Ricky Burns and Bradley Saunders
Lightweight – Kevin Mitchell, Anthony Crolla, Derry Matthews, Luke Campbell, Tommy Coyle and Ohara Davies
Super Featherweight – Stephen Smith
Featherweight – Josh Warrington
Super Bantamweight – Kid Galahad and Gavin McDonnell
Bantamweight – Lee Haskins and Gamal Yafai
Super Flyweight – Kal Yafai
Flyweight – Kevin Satchell
There are some mouth watering domestic fights coming up, some of them potentially for world titles and in our next article, I will run through some of those fights and how I see the outcomes and my current pound for pound top 10.
