Buy One Season Wonders

With the amount of big money being available to the top clubs to spend, many try to target a marquee signing. While this is fine, there is a difference between signing a player who is truly world-class and one who is coming of the back of a good season. Angel Di Maria is a fine player, but would Man United have really spent the best part of £60 million on him had he not been man of the match in a Champions League Final?

Tottenham splashed out nearly £30 million on Erik Lamela following one good season with Roma, while Sunderland signed American flop Jozy Altidore based on one good season in Dutch football. While it can be tempting to sign a player who has just had a wonderful twelve months, it can be well worth having a look back at what they’ve done in the rest of the career before splashing out big money on someone who might not live up to their previous heights.
